Is my Tin Foil Barb pregnant?
My TF Barb looks to have developed a large belly. It's in a tank with a Convict Cichlid, a Jack Dempsey & a Rusty Cichlid. (I've noticed that the Rusty has become quite red recently). Is it possible that the TF got pregnant by one of these fish, or is the belly getting larger for some other reason? (the TF looks very healthy)
Tinfoil Barbs lay eggs, so they cannot become pregnant. There are two fairly likely options, neither of which are bad things. The most likely reason for this swelling is it simply got overfed. These fish are pigs and will eat everything they can get. The second possible reason is that it is a female carrying eggs (unfertilized, so it's not pregnant). Either way, just let it be. However, if the scales around the abdomen are protruding at odd angles, it could be dropsy, which means there is excessive fluid building up in the body cavity. This is nearly impossible to treat, and almost always fatal, but 1/2-1 tablespoon of epsom per gallon could potentially work to draw the excess fluid out by osmosis (raising the specific gravity outside of the fish will draw water from within it to create equillibrium).
