Ribbon Antique
Is anyone interested in a ribbon that says "LADYSMITH RELIEVED FEB 28 1900"?
We have a little information about the ribbon and are interested in finding if it has any worth? Does anyone know of a way to do this? Do you know of any good military antique memorabilia dealers?
I don't know where you are based, you might have more luck making enquiries in England or South Africa. Ladysmith was a town in South Africa beseiged by the Boers during their war with Britain. The seige was also the occasion were Baden Powell got the idea for the Boy Scouts so there might be an interest there.
I doubt whether the ribbon is particularly rare - there were huge celebrations in Britain when the seige was relieved and the ribbon might have been made for those celebrations rather than for the military.
Incidentally, Lady Smith was a real person, there's another town called "Harrysmith" named for her husband. She was actually Spanish and met her husband at the seige of Badajoz while he was fighting in the Napoleonic wars.
