Purple Feathers
Fully feathered purple martin won't fly?
The bird is over 30 days old. It is fully feathered and almost the size of an adult martin. She had fallen out of the nest and I cared for it. I am trying to get her to fly. I put her in her house and the other martins come by, but she will only jump in a tree. She will sit there for hours. Then she ends up on the ground and I put her outside again in a tree and the same thing repeats--fall down and sit on the ground.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Have you ever dealt with purple martins?
I'm a wild bird rehabilitator and purple martins happen to be my favorite bird <3 It sounds like you have a fledgling, if it is smaller than an adult, can perch on your finger and flap its wings it's a fledgling. Birds leave the nest a week to 10 days before they can fly but they're parents should still be feeding them. If you really think it's an adult there is probably an injury or illness and you need to take it to your local wildlife rehabilitator. Please don't try and treat the bird yourself, I often have people bring me birds and they've tried to feed it or administer medical attention and in doing so have further harmed the bird.
