How long can a coral live in dark light?
I have been keeping a fish only tank for a wile and have been successful, so I thought it would be cool to add a mushroom coral. But I am concerned it is not getting enough light, if it isn't how would I know? How long would it take for it to die?
well corals are not fully photosynthetic they also require direct feeding of planktonic organisms such as zooplanktons,small copepods and phytoplankton(these can be bought at your local pet store usually made by Kent) even though they do require direct feeding once a week they still require medium to high light. the optimal amount of wattage per gallon is 4-6 since you havent added your aquarium size i cant really recommend anything. when keeping corals you need a special fixture for coral life and anemone life, these can be rather expensive unless you shop around. when i bought my first coral lighting fixture i bought one with lunar lights and LEDS which made it ten times more expensive($400 dollars) and i never use the lunar lights as they are way to bright, i just use the LED on occasions. on my 2nd reef aquarium i bought halides lights only which was half the price around $150 dollars, so buy cheap if you dont want lunar lights or LEDS. mushrooms are pretty easy to tell if they are dieing such as darking in color, "uprooting" from their rock or other placements and shriveling, once these processes are in effect it is rather hard to revive them so dont buy corals even medium light corals if you do not have the proper lighting fixture, also it sorta sounds like you are adding corals to your FOWLR tank? which means most likely 70% of the fish you have are not Reef Safe in which i mean they nip at soft corals or will knock them over. corals can begin to die once acclimated, when you acclimate your coral you want to use drip method as you want them to acclimate to every single parameter in your aquarium from ph to calcium. when acclimated keep the corals fully submerged even when adding them to your aquarium, if brought out of the water it will discourage them for coming out for quiet a while. also research the proper placement and necessities for each and every corals; usually mushrooms require bottom placement,medium light and medium water flow. when keeping corals you must have pristine waters along with backup supplements. in order to have pristine water you must have a protein skimmer to get rid of any harmful wastes in the water that will discourage coral growth,eating, and propagation. supplements are important to corals as the supplements they require are rapidly loss during filtration, by the skimmer and filter unless you have a sump/refugium. supplements are easily bought in your local fish store and can be costly, the main supplements require by most corals are Iodide,calcium, strontium and molybdenum which allows the corals to maintain their skeletons(lps corals and sps corals) and allow them to grow much faster.
