How many places can you name where the folkway of an honour is a feather in you hat or hair?
What are the most common reasons for the bestowal?
What folktales arise from such honours and actions?
Feathered headdresses appear in the frescoes and bas reliefs of Ancient Egypt. The most important feather was an ostrich plume worn by Maat. Isis wore a vulture headdress. On Greek vases, Minerva shines in her plumed helmet. The folkway takes us along to the depiction of Gothic women in tapestry and stained glass. Then there are the women in paintings, stucco and tapestry of the Renaissance, seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The folkway then travels across the ocean to America, where feathers were also in demand and not just for decoration. They were a status symbol and showed one held a grand position in society and could afford the costly snowy egret feathers. Feathers have been symbolic of many things, from the highest principle of truth, to powerful protection, to symbols of victory and prosperity. In all these there is honor in the wearing of feathers.

A folktale example would be Robin Hood who ruled Sherwood Forrest and wore a feathered hat. The Pied Piper wore a feather too.
