Guinea pig sick??
We've had our guinea pig, Moe, for 4 years. A couple weeks ago the pad on his foot broke open and he was bleeding ( a lot). His foot is fine now but he's lost weight (from 5 lbs to 3lbs) and I don't see him drinking enough water. He's showing signs of fatigue. He's still active but I'm thinking something might be wrong. Maybe he's dehydrated. Should I take him to the vet? Is there anything they can do for him?
A four year old piggie is right on the cusp of entering "senior" age. This doesn't necessary mean his behavior will change - my oldest, coincidentally named "Mo," is five years old and is quite the whippersnapper. However, the dramatic weight loss you describe is definitely alarming. Weight loss, in any increment, is the first sign of a problem. Five pounds is awfully big for a guinea pig - my biggest weighs in at approx. 3.1 pounds - what kind of foods is he getting? Is he currently eating as much as he did before? Is he showing any loss of interest in food?
Taking into consideration his recent foot injury and his weight loss, it would probably be in his best interest to get him seen by a veterinarian. They'll most likely give him a thorough exam to verify if anything specific is wrong. It's possible they'll give you Critical Care, a high-nutrient pellet supplement used for sick pigs to get their weight up. It's crushed up into a fine powder which you then mix with water and feed by using a needle-less syringe, i.e. force feeding.
