Glue Applicators
Is it possible to glue polymer clay pieces together?
Hello! I purchased Sculpey III polymer clay about a month ago, and I've been working on my first model since then because the pieces I make keep tearing (due to constantly messing with them). My sister suggested that I bake everything seperately and then glue them all together, but I'm not sure if that's possible. I'm going to buy the Varathane water-based finish and apply that on after it's baked as well. I read about using a 2-part Epoxy Glue for broken pieces, but again, I'm not certain if that would work well enough for what I want. I'm scared my pieces will fall off if I bake them together as a whole.
One a side note: as for the Varathane, how long and with what temperature should I bake the glaze to set it in after I've painted it on? I bought sponge applicator brushes to use too, are these good?

The varathane will not require baking. It will dry on its own.
It is definitely possible to bake your pieces separately. In fact, if you're working with enough clay that the thickness will vary greatly, it is encouraged. If you have a 1/2" and 1/4" thick pieces, if you cook it at the time suggested for the 1/4", the 1/2" won't be finished properly, and if you cook it for the 1/2" time, the 1/4" piece could be over done and turn colors. This is very disappointing if it's your ears on an elf sculpture. Been there, done that. I now cook the thicker head for about half the required time, add the ears, and then cook it for the prescribed time for the ear thickness. This technique also helps keep the shape for adding more clay for smoother detail work, too.
They do sell glue specifically for polymer clay, but you can also use other glue, like superglue. Once you get the Varathane on there, glue won't be such an issue. Wire can also be used to hold things in place. Wood, too. The temperatures required for polymer clay will not burn wood, so toothpicks are a great choice for small areas. PC does really well at bonding together, and the Varathane will just make sure it all stays together.
