How to sew ribbon on a curved pieve of fabric?
Im sewing a cosplay costume, and theres a curved edge which has a ribbon running along it. I can sew the curve, but the edge of it gets all bunched up. Is there a trick to this or do I need special ribbon?
With some, but not all, trims and ribbons, you can pre-shape the trim to the shape of the curve with an iron. Trace off the shape of the curves to be sewn on paper. Place that on your ironing board, and start by pinning the cut edge of the trim to the paper with a couple of pins going straight into the ironing board. Use a good shot of steam on the trim, then shape the trim to the outline you've drawn, adding more pins, steam and pressing with just the tip of the iron until it shapes and lies down.
Try it on a scrap -- petersham ribbon, some polyester ribbons, and Silk Ribbon can be shaped quite a bit with this technique. Bias shapes well with this technique also. Polyester Grosgrain won't shape well, and most firmly woven trims won't shape well -- in which case, it's back to the dart method of shaping.
