can i use two sets of regular audio/video cables instead of the special hd cables with the extra colors?
the special hd cables have six connections with the various colors, can't i just use two sets of regular cables with connecting them to the same outputs and inputs?
Temporarily, sure. No harm done.
Dedicated component cables have better shielding and bandwidth, so they may give you slightly better video quality.
