Bride Wedding
Bumping into the bride at wedding dances: is this a common tradition?
My mom told me about a wedding she attended. During the dance, the bride's friends were dancing around her, bumping into her. My mom was alarmed because she thought it looked almost like they were trying to knock her down but the bride assured her that it was just one of their customs.
Has anyone ever heard of something like this?
My great grandmother told me a story about that once. It's actually kind of funny. She says that the bridesmaids used to do that to "bump away" the spirits surrounding the bride's bodice. It's an old custom that was supposed to "make the bride more pure" for the groom on the night of the wedding. I suppose not many people still believe in it. It's an elder and weird tradition started by the wives back in the day. I guess they had nothing better to do except for sit around and come up with superstitions like that?
